At 14 o’clock on March 16, 2018, National Art Museum of China(NAMOC) witnessed the opening ceremony of the Teaching Achievements Exhibition of the School of Calligraphy, HBAFA on the 10th anniversary.

The leaders and guests present at the ceremony were He Jishan, a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and former President of Central South University, Wu Weishan, a member of the Standing Committee of 13th CPPCC, the Head of NAMOC and Vice President of Chinese Calligraphers Association(CCA), Chen Hongwu, the Secretary-general of CCA and Vice President of CCA, Liu Hongbin, Vice President of CCA, Liu Fengtai, the former Director of Higher Education Department of the Education Ministry and the current Director of Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Department of Education Ministry, Ji Ping, former Vice President of Development and Planning Department of Education Ministry, former Director of Higher Education Teaching Evaluation Department of Education Ministry and Vice President of China Association of Higher Education, Wang Tingshan, Vice President of Education Department of Hebei Province, Zhang Xiliang, the well-known calligrapher, Xu Zhenglian, a member of the Board of Directors of CCA and Vice Director of Seal Cutting Committee of CCA, Zeng Xiang, the Secretary General of Calligraphy and Seal Carving School of National Academy of Painting, Zhen Zhongyi, the President of HBAFA, Zhen Xinheng, Vice President, Zhen Mo, Vice President, Cui Jingzhe, Vice President, and Chen Yangjing, the President of the School of Calligraphy. The opening ceremony was hosted by the Chang Xiao, the news anchor in China Central Television.

At the opening ceremony, President Zhen Zhongyi delivered a welcome speech. He expressed gratitude for the support of leaders and people from various circles. He said that the display was not only the teaching achievements exhibition on the 10th anniversary of the School of Calligraphy, but also the “answer sheet” to national higher education of calligraphy. He hoped that leaders and artists would give precious advice.

Wu Weishan, Chen Hongwu, Liu Fengtai, Wang Ting Shan and Wang Yongjiang also gave a speech respectively. Wu Weishan, the Head of NAMOC, fully affirmed HBAFA’s contribution in inheriting traditional Chinese culture and carrying forward calligraphy art. He called on people to support calligraphy education, and hoped students carry forward the calligraphy art. Meanwhile, he fully affirmed President Zhen Zhongyi’s ideas on school and felt proud to host the calligraphy exhibition of HBAFA.

Chen Hongwu, the Secretary-general of CCA, pointed that he was excited about the development of the School of Calligraphy and distinctive school-running ideas. The achievements attribute to the Academy’s awareness to follow the country’s call, professional consciousness to deepen education reform and academic awareness to flower different styles of calligraphy. At the same time, he hoped that the School of Calligraphy could inject vigor to the current calligraphy.

Liu Fengtai, the former Director of Higher Education Department of the Education Ministry, pointed out that HBAFA insisted on the right direction, deepened education reform, explored talents cultivation pattern and generated many distinctive talents under the leadership of President Zhen Zhongyi. He hoped that students could cherish the opportunity at school, dig traditional Chinese culture and make a powerful and elegant imprint on the history of China higher education.

Wang Tingshan, Vice President of Education Department of Hebei Province, fully affirmed HBAFA’s contribution to higher calligraphy education in Hebei Province, and demanded HBAFA to implement the spirit of Xi Jinping’s speech, put excellent works creation at important position, climb towards “art peak”, and become a significant base to carry forward traditional Chinese culture essence as well as a crucial force to create harmonious Hebei and culturally strong province.

Professor Wang Yongjiang introduced the School of Calligraphy from many aspects, such as development ideas, courses design, teaching reform etc.

The attendees also include council members of CCA, members of professional committees, sister colleges, current young calligraphers, over 300 teachers and students from the School of Calligraphy, and more than 30 domestic and foreign media.

The exhibition covers 158 works, including 52 teachers’ works and 106 students’ works, most of which are cursive works, some seal and official works. The exhibition displayed the original works, ups and downs of the School of Calligraphy, as well as the achievements of higher education creation.

At 9 o’clock on March 16, NAMOC saw the Seminar on Higher Calligraphy Education. The seminar, co-hosted by Jiang Shoutian, a member of academic committee of CCA, and Chen Yangjing, the President of the School of Calligraphy, focused on the hot topics of current calligraphy education in colleges. About 30 experts and scholars attended the seminar, including Zhang Xiliang, Xu Zhenglian, Li Tinghua, He Kaixin, Zeng Xiang, Hu Chuanhai and Mei Mosheng.

Founded in 2008, the School of Calligraphy of HBAFA is biggest School of Calligraphy in China with 2,248 students and near 200 full-time and part-time teachers. Devoted to the reform of calligraphy education, the School cultivates talents’ artistic appreciation and calligraphy creation abilities, generates new education pattern focusing on cursive with the cooperation of theoretic education and has explored a new way for calligraphy education reform. In recent years, about 162 students’ works have won awards and been selected by national-level exhibitions hosted by CCA, and 1131 students’ works provincial-level exhibitions.
