Hebei Academy of Fine Arts (HBAFA) is a full-time undergraduate Academy of Fine Arts approved by the Ministry of Education of P.R.C., and one of the nine independently established Academies of Fine Arts in China. Adhering to the spirit of school motto, "be confident, be independent, and be first," the Academy invites national influential artists and industry leaders to instruct students with the integration of study, research and creation so as to cultivate applied art talents for Hebei Province and beyond, especially the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area.
HBAFA provides 11 teaching units and 78 majors for undergraduates and junior college students. The Academy, where a national animation industry base and the creation base of the Academy of Fine Arts of Democratic League are located, enrolls students from 27 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions. It has won the awards of the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education, and the honors of Advanced Units of National Entrepreneurship Education Research and Practice, The First Model Colleges of Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Education in Hebei Province, Cultural Industry Model Base in Hebei Province, Hebei Garden Units etc. In 2016, it was selected as an intellectual construction station for cultivating future masters. In 2017, it was listed as a pilot college of the training program for inheritors by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education, and designated as "The Research Base of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hebei Province" by the Culture Department of Hebei Province.
In the meantime, excellent conditions are available in the Academy with a modernized library, an art museum, 15 research institutes, including a sculpture creation institute, a research center for Chen Zifen’s paintings with liner drawing, an institute of environmental design, and a research center for the restoration of paintings and calligraphy, 34 high standard training rooms, and 133 specialized teaching studios. In addition, 50 practice bases integrating study, research and creation have been established in the Academy and beyond, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang. The Academy has spent a lot of money building high standard dormitories, catering centers and sports fields. The campus has been fully covered with Internet and the life of teachers and students has improved significantly.
Carrying out the education policy of the Party comprehensively, the Academy adheres to the school-running thought of “improving quality, optimizing structure, embodying characteristics and pursuing scientific development”, enhances connotation construction and highlights distinctive features in teaching. Therefore, the teaching and education quality has improved remarkably, and the graduation employment rate keeps at 95% above. In recent years, the Academy has undertaken 319 scientific research projects, published 2,315 excellent academic papers, 140 monographs and textbooks, and 57 self-designed teaching materials, and won 877 art work prizes, including 124 national-level prizes. In 2017, a work named Lin Huiyin and Tagore by Zhang Hua from the School of Sculpture was selected by the 7th Beijing International Art Biennale sponsored by China Artists Association. The film entitled City Traveler, produced by teachers including Wang Zhirun, was shortlisted in the 2017 Canada Golden Maple Film Festival. Three micro films including Smart Phone and Agreement were awarded Candidate Prize by the Second International Microfilm Festival as well as Excellence Prize by China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival. In 2016, oil paintings by Li Yabin and Wei Jin were selected for exhibition in the 6th Beijing International Art Biennale. Carving works by Sui Wenhao and Zhao Zuolong were selected by the 11th Exhibition of Chinese Calligraphy and Seal Cutting and the 8th Exhibition of China Calligraphy Beginners’ Works respectively.
HBAFA follows the pace of the times, adheres to openness, and actively carries out international communication and cooperation. Currently, the Academy has established collaborative relationship with 22 universities and 3 international communication associations in 12 countries, such as Kyoto College of Graduate Studies for Informatics in Japan, Honam University in the Republic of Korea, Kyonggi University in the Republic of Korea, Lvov Academy of Fine Arts in Ukraine, Naples Academy of Fine Arts in Italy. Meanwhile, the Academy has launched many international programs, which are straight entrance programs from junior college students to undergraduates between China and Korea, between China and Russia, from undergraduates to postgraduates between China and Italy, as well as exchange programs for art undergraduates between China and Russia. The implementation of international strategy in teaching lays the foundation for the reform and development of school education.
The campus now covers an area of 1,750 mu (1,166,666,000 square meters), and the construction area is 350,000 square meters. With hills, rivers, green grass, constructions combined with Chinese and western styles on campus featuring natural and humanistic harmony, the Academy is an ideal palace of art learning and production for students.
The North Campus is dominated by ancient Chinese buildings. The Wenwu Temple, characterized by the construction style in Ming and Qing Dynasties, is mainly structured with columns, beams, purlins and other components, and decorated with painting,sculpture, and mural inside, reproducing the solemnity and mystery of ancient temples. The Chuang-tzu Temple, a replica of constructions in Tang Dynasty, which is combined with the great hall, pavilions, screen walls, corridors etc., reproduces the magnificent vigor and momentum of buildings in Tang Dynasty. The library and Moxiang Building, which has black tiles, white walls, door shelter made of cyan bricks and wood carving window, integrate with other constructions, which demonstrates the elegance and dignity of Anhui-style structure.
The South Campus is based on European architectural style. Gothic Magic Castles, Roman International Art Exhibition Center and Baroque Art Museum form European classical garden together, comprehensively displaying western religion and art. More than 10 originally designed exhibition halls, such as The World Bridge Art Exhibition Hall, The Castle Corridor Exhibition Hall, and The Octagonal Exhibition Hall for Sculptures, launched many exhibitions with distinctive features, such as the famous western sculpture pictures exhibition, world-known castle photos exhibition, well-known western paintings exhibition etc. On the Art Empire Square, the high Bell Tower, the elegant vaulted windows, the Sculpture of Goddess of Victory and the tall western knights attract domestic and foreign scholars and tourists. It is also a place for large activities such as graduation ceremony and evening parties.
In the future, HBAFA will further grasp the opportunities, forge ahead, deepen the reform of education and teaching, take quality-oriented development road, cultivate more high-quality and practical art talents to meet the demand of regional economic growth, create national first-rate Academy of Fine Arts with distinctive features, and contribute to the integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei Province.
